St James’ Park is home to the Premier League Newcastle United Football Club, and the atmosphere there is electric. The stadium, which was built in the late 19th century, is the oldest in the Premier League and the largest in the North East of England. The atmosphere gets particularly intense when it is a local darby home game against Sunderland, with chants and cheers from the passionate Newcastle fans ringing around the stadium. The atmosphere is further intensified by the iconic Gallowgate End, which is where the most passionate fans congregate. This is the oldest stand in the stadium and is home to the famous ‘Toon Army’. The Gallowgate End is also home to the ‘singing section’, where fans will sing for the entire 90 minutes of the match. The atmosphere is infectious, and the whole stadium is a sea of black and white. In October 2019, Pubs Galore conducted a study to discover which football grounds had the most pubs within a half-mile radius. Unsurprisingly, Newcastle United’s St James’ Park came out on top due to its city centre location. Amazingly, there were an astonishing 108 different pubs within a half-mile of the turnstiles – far outnumbering Newport County in second place, with 32 pubs nearby. Although controversial to many, the Saudi takeover of Newcastle United in 2021 marked a major turning point in the history of the club. The consortium of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, and PCP Capital Partners, a private equity firm, bought an 80% stake in the club. The takeover was the richest in Premier League history, with the consortium investing a reported £300m into the club. The takeover saw the club’s finances improve significantly and allowed it to become a more competitive club on the pitch. The Saudi investment also allowed the club to bring in new players and staff, as well as renovating the club’s facilities. The takeover is seen as a major step forward for the club. In January 2022, Newcastle United were at the bottom of the Premier League, seemingly destined for relegation. However, with the appointment of a new manager and the arrival of a few key players during subsequent transfer windows, the team has since skyrocketed to 3rd in the Premier League and made it to the final of the EFL Cup at Wembley. The stadium has a capacity of over 52,000 and is one of the largest stadiums in the Premier League. St James’ Park is one of the oldest and most iconic stadiums in the country. It has undergone a number of renovations over the years, most recently in 2000 when the current main stand was built. The ground has a number of facilities including a club shop, a museum, restaurants, bars, and a conference center. On match days, there are a number of food and drink outlets available around the stadium as well as a number of pre-match activities held in the concourse areas. There is also a dedicated family section within the stadium.
